1966 Martin D-28S

$12,500

This 1966 Martin D-28S is a bit of a "case queen" that has been lovingly cared for over its 60-year lifespan.

According to Gruhn, it is one of only seven (7) D-28S dreadnoughts built in 1966.  This one is even rarer because only four (4) of those were built with solid headstocks.

Beautiful Sitka spruce top and straight grained Brazilian rosewood back and sides.

> 100% original finish, no overspray

> small maple bridge plate

> Grover tuning machines in perfect condition

> original 1 7/8" nut

> no electronics

> new compensated bone saddle

Original frets are excellent and show only negligible signs of wear.

I believe the pickguard is the original celluloid tortoise, but I cannot guarantee that.  Based on my research, Martin switched to black guards in late 1966.

No cracks or damage.  All of the braces are original and tight.  Structurally the guitar is superb condition.  It does not need a reset, and if it has ever had a neck reset, there is no visible evidence.

The maple bridge plate has been professionally plugged with hard maple, drilled, and reamed.

Cosmetically, this guitar is in excellent condition for its age.  There is a small indentation on the edge of the headstock veneer, just to the left of the D string tuner.  You can see this clearly in one of the headstock photos.  There is a hole where a strap button used to be installed on the heel.  There is a tiny scratch on the back of the neck, as pictured.  There are a few places on the top where you can see hints of normal lacquer checking.  The photos are an accurate representation of the checking.

Playability is superb.  Every note frets cleanly and intonation is excellent.

Action and neck angle are ideal:

12th fret action - .095" on the 6th string and .078" on the 1st string

7th fret relief - .004"

This guitar will not disappoint.  In this condition, it would make a nice collector's piece, but it also plays wonderfully and deserves to be played.

I have owned it for about three years.  I have enjoyed owning it, but it doesn't get played often enough and it is time to move it along.

Comes in a period-correct case, which I believe to be original to the guitar.

Smoke free, pet free, humidity-controlled home.  Always stored in the case.

Strung with .013 gauge Newtone phosphor bronze strings
